Asian College of Journalism

Sashi Kumar, Chairman of Media Development Foundation and Asian College of Journalism, on the occasion of the inauguration of the M.S.Subbulakshmi Auditorium on October 20, 2018:

"We are privileged to be able to dedicate this auditorium to the diva of Carnatic music, M.S.Subbulakshmi.

The auditorium has been architecturally and acoustically designed at once for state-of- the-art digital multimedia expression, and as a touchstone of pure sound, not amplified, not colored by electronics. It is the same technology that boosts and distorts musical articulation that enables us here to rediscover the simple unadulterated beauty of the original voice, the musical instrument, without the decibel layers in which they are lost in the average modern kacheri. We believe this space will turn out to be unique in this respect.

The ethereal, blissful beauty of the singing voice is best exemplified by M.S. Subbulakshmi. The ineffable quality of her music, the magical spell she weaves with it, is comparable to the tantalizing enigma, in western art, of the Mona Lisa smile. Who, but MS, could we dedicate this auditorium to?

It was the mridangam maestro Palghat Mani Iyer, who made a call for public concerts (i.e. beyond the small chamber music gatherings) without microphones or electronic amplification. This 342- seater auditorium will, I hope, be a first big step in realizing his hope, and become a landmark venue for mikeless concerts in future November music seasons in Chennai - which are arguably the biggest annual music festivals in the world. "
